Diverse contributors from various backgrounds, including companies and individual developers, can come together to innovate, share ideas, and enhance the software. This collective effort is evident in sectors like the entertainment industry, where Linux is utilized for animation and special effects, demonstrating its flexibility and power in creative applications. The open-source nature of Linux fosters an environment of continuous improvement and adaptation, essential for economic recovery and technological advancement across multiple sectors.

Linux-powered Giants

Linux and the other open source technologies power Google's underlying infrastructure. In particular, Linux served as the icebreaker for Kubernetes, and other Google's contributions to the open source world.

GE

GE is one of the bigshots that implements not one, but multiple corporate open innovation models. They are built on its GE Open Innovation Manifesto, which says, “We believe openness leads to inventiveness and usefulness.” To this end, General Electric crowdsources innovation from experts and entrepreneurs worldwide to solve various internal challenges.

One of GE’s significant initiatives is the First Build. It is a platform that enables the collaboration among designers, engineers, and budding innovators to share new ideas, mainly focusing on creating new home appliances. GE then makes the best ideas available for purchase so that companies develop them further and bring them to life.
