I used to trust Alexa web
analytics and ratings.
Today, they may often make me laugh.
The two web analytics
services I use nearly every day are
Google and Alexa. Google stats look very reliable
and useful for
value creation,
content marketing and search engine optimization (SEO)
purposes.
Alexa stats used to look
reliable too some time ago. Yet, recently Alexa web
analytics started producing strange jumps − sharp ups
and downs for 1000ventures.com and other
my websites. Overnight, the Alexa rating of
1000ventures.com may go up 20+% or down 20+% while
Google stats show stable results.
The more, the geography of
website visitors produced by Alexa web analytics also
looks strange. One day, the top countries by the share
of visitors are
USA and
India
which is also so according to Google stats. The next
day, Google delivers the same results, while Alexa web
analytics says that the most contributing countries were
Pakistan and
Turkey, while
USA and
India are not among Top 10.
That's why Alexa web
analytics and ratings make often me laugh today.
I wrote this article in
mid 2021.
At the end of 2021, Alexa
announced that they would be retiring Alexa.com on May
1, 2022.
